Putin and Kim Bolster Russia-North Korea Ties in Summit
On June 18th, 2024 Putin arrived to North
Korea, where its leader, Kim Jong Un received him with cars, gifts and pets.
The last time the two Presidents met in person was in
September 2023, when Kim traveled to Russia for a summit with Putin, amid
warnings from the United States that the two leaders were seeking to reach an
arms deal in the context of the war in Ukraine.
Growing relations between Putin and Kim Jong-un could allow Pyongyang access to weapons and technology that sanctions have prevented it from obtaining for two decades, particularly for its nuclear-capable ballistic missile program. However, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan warned in 2023 that North Korea "will pay a price" if it reaches an arms deal with Russia.
North Korea is already under UN and US
sanctions due to its weapons of mass destruction program. Putin's recent visit
to North Korea shows Russia's willingness to break its international isolation
following the invasion of Ukraine, which could call into question Moscow's
support for international sanctions against Pyongyang.
The Kremlin and North Korea signed a
bilateral agreement that claims it respects international law. However, it has
further intentions, including a clause of mutual defense in case one of them is
attacked. Both countries have a relevant developed nuclear arsenal and only
Russia have signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Is important to
highlight this agreement because of the Russia-Ukraine war and the constant
tension between North Korea and South Korea.
This treaty leads to other countries preoccupation, claiming thins union has not peaceful objectives and threatens peace of International Community. The principal preoccupation of this action belongs to the opposites States in the world, the competition with comes with fear, the power of deterrence of these two States increase as France, Uk, USA and Israel has made decades ago.
On his last visit to Pyongyang, Putin was personally received by Kim Jong-un at Sunan airport, in the North Korean capital. This meeting marked Putin's first visit to North Korea in 24 years. The welcome included a red carpet, streets decorated with giant portraits of Putin and Kim Jong-un, and enthusiastic crowds cheering both leaders. The reception also featured military parades and massive choreographed events (The Independent).
Putin brought several gifts for Kim
Jong-un, including an Aurus Senat luxury car, a tea set and an admiral's
dagger. In response, Kim presented Putin with a pair of Pungsan hunting dogs, a
breed native to North Korea, as well as several works of art depicting him.
These gift exchanges underscore the deepening
ties between Russia and North Korea, despite the international sanctions both
countries face. UN sanctions prohibit the supply of luxury goods to North
Korea, making these gifts particularly notable.
This visit reinforced both countries'
bilateral relations in this side of the world, where the constant military
competition with USA, NATO and UE. Both countries are in the public opinion and foreign policy of
the states.
Is presumed that this union could lead to further
coalition of military forces against their common enemies
This meeting between these leaders is truly a very interesting case, I find really interesting the information you are sharing. However, I think that you can go deeper into the causes of the meeting. You can analice it as a message to USA and European countries, taking into account that there had been claims that Russia is losing its allies and its support from non-occidental countries. Also, more information about USA and NATOs responses to the meeting could help to understand how this event affects the whole international scenario and the outcomes we could expect. Overall, I don't think that this would end here, we are going to see more meetings like this and the rising of tensions between Europe and eastern countries, so keep updating and sharing more information!! :)
ResponderEliminarThe recent visit of President Putin to North Korea, where he was warmly welcomed by Kim Jing-un, shows that the relationship between both countries is becoming stronger and powerful despite the global tensions. The alliance, highlighted by the leaders' disregard for existing sanctions and potential arms deals, increases fears and concerns about global security, especially considering both countries' nuclear capabilities. This is also a response to the various Western processes and alliances, so who knows, this could be the return of the former Warsaw Pact. This new partnership could reshape global politics, increasing, as I said before, the fear of their enemies and emphasizing the military competition with great powers like United States, NATO and European Union.

EliminarI would say that the recent visit of President Putin to North Korea, where he was warmly welcomed by Kim Jing-un, as everyone could see, shows that the relationship between both countries is becoming stronger and powerful despite the global tensions. The alliance, highlighted by the leaders' disregard for existing sanctions and potential arms deals, increases fears and concerns about global security, especially considering both countries' nuclear capabilities. I believe that this is also a response to the various Western processes and alliances, so who knows, this could be the return of the former Warsaw Pact. In my opinion, this new partnership could reshape global politics, increasing, as I said before, the fear of their enemies and emphasizing the military competition with great powers like United States, NATO and European Union. Something extra: I didn´t know that United Nations sanctions forbade supply of luxury goods to North Korea, so thanks for the info, guys.
